Stick it to Bushwick! Wheat paste glue D.I.Y

Fat Moose took to the streets of Brooklyn, painting the town with the Fat Moose. Want to do the same with your art? Follow the simple instructions below to make your own glue for pasting paper on the walls of the city streets!

All you need is water and wheat flour … yes that’s it! The wheat paste technique, which resembles the process of making a cake, is a great way to share art at a low cost, not to mention it is simple to prepare.

For four saucepans of resistant glue the total cost is around $5. But you might want to consider not cooking in that same saucepan as your usual meal, which means boosting up your budget to $10!

Preparation: 5 minutes

Cooking: 20 minutes

Cool off: 1 hour

Ingredients and Utensils: – water – wheat flour – spatula – large recipient – saucepan (prepare not to use it for food again..)

Chef’s tip: one cup of flour for 4 cups water

  1. Blast the playlist we created below. This makes any task more enjoyable!

  2. Spread the flour in a large receptacle. Using the spatula, mix it with four times its quantity of water. Keep stirring constantly to prevent it from forming lumps.

  3. Pour the mixture into the saucepan. Warm gently until it starts to boil a little. Check the consistency. And if it’s smooth, it’s ready!

  4. You can either cool it down for an hour or use it now. If you want to use it right away, get a thinner consistency because the glue can get thick pretty quickly. If you want to use it from the saucepan directly and wander into the streets of Brooklyn like we did, let it cool for an hour.

Nevertheless we have to warn you, the glue gets a lot more sticky and a bit ugly when cooled! You can add a portion of water and heat the mixture a bit if you plan on using it later. But keep the glue for only a week max, because after that, it begins to smell really bad and your roommates will start looking at you funny. Now that you are ready to go glue some propaganda papers all around the city, don’t forget to get us your feedback!
